The BEST Hotels in Petra (Luxury, Mid-Range and Budget)

Well, as you might have already read, Petra did not live up to the hype for me. The scale and history are undeniably impressive, but the experience can feel overwhelming, crowded, and a bit disconnected from the magic people often describe.

That said, I still think Petra is worth visiting once in your lifetime, especially if you approach it the right way. Where you stay makes a real difference: a good hotel can add comfort, calm, and a sense of immersion that helps balance the intensity of the site itself and elevates the overall experience.

In this guide I will present you my top picks for the best hotels to stay when you visit Petra in Jordan, based on my extensive research and personal experience. I have covered budget, mid-range and luxury options, in order to help you find your ideal place for accommodation, regardless of your budget.

What is Petra?

Well, I am sure that most of you already know what Petra is. However, I do think that a small summary will be useful for everyone. For example, did you know that Petra is also called the “Rose City” because of the pink and red hues of its sandstone cliffs?

Petra is an ancient city located in southern Jordan, famous for its rock-cut buildings. It was founded as the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom around the 4th century BCE. Its strategic position along important trade routes allowed it to grow as a center for commerce, connecting Arabia, Egypt, and the Mediterranean world.

One of Petra’s most impressive features is that much of the city was carved directly into the rock face. The city also included temples, tombs, a Roman-style theater, and an extensive system of water channels and cisterns that allowed its inhabitants to survive in an arid desert environment.

Petra began to decline after trade routes changed and a series of earthquakes damaged the city. By the early medieval period, it was largely abandoned and remained unknown to the Western world until it was rediscovered in 1812.

Today, Petra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. It is also one of the most recognized monuments in the world, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

How to Get to Petra

In order to visit Petra, you will have to reach the town of Wadi Musa first. The easiest way to do so is by renting a car. Therefore, I suggest the Monte Carlo car rentals, as my experience with them was terrific.

Several public buses operate daily between Amman and Petra. JETT, one of the largest bus companies in Jordan, operates daily bus services from Amman to Petra, and the journey takes about 3.5 to 4 hours. While this is a cost-effective method, it may require some planning to match the bus schedules. Make sure to be updated on the schedules and book your ticket in advance.

Lastly, Shared taxis are another standard mode of transportation in Jordan. They depart from many locations in Amman and take passengers to Wadi Musa. The shared taxis are generally faster than buses but can be cramped and uncomfortable.

Finally, if time is not on your side, you can take an organized 2-day trip from Amman, which includes visits to Petra, the Dead Sea, and Wadi Rum. This tour is organized through GetYourGuide, which is one of the most reliable platforms worldwide. It is definitely worth taking a look!

Should I Stay in Wadi Musa?

A night view of the city of Wadi Musa, near petra

The short answer is yes, you should.

Wadi Musa (which translates to “Valley of Moses”) is the small town build next to the ancient city of Petra. It is named after the biblical figure Moses, as it is believed that he passed through the valley and struck water from the rock for his followers at the site of Moses’ Spring.

Wadi Musa itself is a town with a population of over 20,000 people. It offers plenty of different options for accommodation, restaurants, and shops.

The trip to Wadi Musa from most major Jordanian cities is exhausting, and you will need at least a full day in the Petra site. That’s why you should dedicate at least 2 days there.

If you have a car, don’t forget to find a high viewpoint and enjoy the stars during nighttime. Just drive around the city and find a place that works for you. The serenity of the city during the night will make it well-worth it for you.

It’s slightly farther from the visitor’s center entrance compared with some boutique luxury hotels in Petra, but offers consistent service standards and brand reliability, ideal if you prefer a predictable, comfortable and mostly quiet stay after a long day exploring Petra’s trails. I am not sure, however, if I would pick it over Mövenpick – maybe for the peace of mind and the views.
